Junior Daffodil Parade promises to be a “storybook” day

Hundreds of kids and adults will join in the fun Saturday, April 5

TACOMA -  Don’t let the cold weather fool you, there are a couple of sure signs that spring really is here — the daffodils are in full bloom and it’s time for the Junior Daffodil Parade.

Hundreds of kids, families and friends are putting the final touches on costumes and homemade floats and getting ready for this annual celebration of kids, fun and spring. The parade is this Saturday, April 5 at 10 a.m. in Tacoma’s Proctor District. It’s the 47th year for the Junior Daffodil Parade; this year’s theme is “The Daffodil Storybook.”

It’s one of the largest kids parades in the state. Groups come from all around the region to take part and join in the fun. Along with kids and floats, you’re sure to spot school bands, “Magnificent Mutts”, clowns and smiles a mile wide.

The Tacoma Little Theatre’s “Triple Threat Academy” is the parade’s grand marshal. Academy students meet weekly to learn a variety of theatrical skills. They’ll be marching in the parade dressed as storybook characters. Also, be sure to show up early to get a good spot and listen to the music of “Starstruck.” The band, made up of three young girls from Tacoma, will be performing from 9 -10am at the corner of North 26th and Proctor.

“I love this year’s theme. Storybooks allow kids to go anywhere and be anyone they want to be,” says Parade Coordinator, Marva Pelander. “It’s what this parade is all about. Kids and parents can use their imagination, be creative, and have a lot of fun. It’s going to be a great day!”

 Jr. Daffodil Parade

Every year dozens of Cub Scout troops, Brownies, Campfire Girls, drill teams, and school bands take part in the parade. Lots of adults and kids come to watch, others join in, and everyone has fun.

The parade starts at the corner of  North 28th and Proctor in Tacoma’s Proctor District. The route runs south on Proctor Street to North 26th and then heads east on 26th for two blocks. There are plenty of great spots to watch the parade in person and you can watch it on TV too. Once again this year, the Junior Daffodil Parade is being taped for telecast on TV Tacoma (cable channel 12) and on cable channel 21 in Pierce County.
